Overview: Operating systems and applications can always be reinstalled, but your data is unique--making it the most important thing on your computer or network. Here's a look at 10 ways you can protect that data from loss and unauthorized access.

Some of the your data may be sensitive and confidential; some of it may be irreplaceable. Either way, protecting it is essential. IT pro Deb Shinder has put together this list of measures you can take to ensure that you don't lose any data or have it fall into the wrong hands. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Use EFS encryption
  • Use disk encryption
  • Make use of a PKI
  • Use rights management to retain control of information
