Overview: Nearly everyone involved in disaster recovery planning has some idea of the types of disasters that could strike, but few have concrete ideas on how to apply those concepts to the plan itself. This classification system defines disaster levels and what your response should be for each one.

An effective disaster recovery plan should map out your response to varying levels of severity, from an unsubstantiated hacking incident to an attack with no data loss to a major system loss or total disruption of services. DR expert Mike Talon built a classification system that facilitates planning for each level of disaster you should prepare for and offers suggestions for the response strategy each level requires. For example:

Level 4: Major data/system loss. This is where multiple critical systems fail at the same time, possibly due to power loss or fire/flood in the data center. With Level 4 disasters, you don't have time to move methodically, but you must proceed with extreme care whenever possible. Initially, you will be acting to restore as much of your data and services as quickly as you can so that end users can resume working with those systems while you find out what went wrong. In Level 4 disasters, you don't carry out a complete investigation until after the restoration of service.Join the discussion of this download.
